Why ABS Pipe?

ABS is often considered as one of the best thermoplastic pipes used in the chemical, mining, civil and water industries.

ABS which stands for Acrylonitrile Butadiene styrene has a huge impact strength compared to PVC, you can hit ABS with a sledge hammer and it will not shatter, you can drop it and it will not smash.

ABS is mainly used in the chemical field as it is highly resistant to many chemicals, if there is hydro carbon’s in the ground then ABS would be a better choice than PVC as PVC breaks down when coming in contact with Hydro Carbons.

With the larger range that ABS is manufactured, larger bores of up to 750mm can be installed, PVC is mainly 375mm dia max.

ABS pipe can be joined together in a couple of ways; it can be glued together using standard couplings. Note – Special ABS glue has to be used.

It can be threaded male and female flush threaded, this gives it instant strength, and on many projects in Queensland we have machined a flush taper joint that is glued and then a couple of stainless screws are screwed in to obtain instant strength so the pipe can be lowered  continuously.

ABS can be slotted in the same patterns as PVC pipe, but cannot be slotted in the finer slots as we have to use special blades for ABS pipe.

With the material having a low tensile strength the pulling force on the threads are a lot lower than of PVC, when installing ABS you must ensure that the pipe does not get stuck before the required lowering depth is maintained.

The  reasons why ABS is difficult to use as borecasing is that, with its excellent thermal installation, when the sun shines on the side of the pipe the pipe will bend in the middle until it cannot support itself and then roll over, this then gives you a pipe bent like a banana to install, when your hole is perfectly straight is very difficult to install the casing being bent.

Drillers try to avoid this situation by covering the pipe to keep the sun off, storing it in a shed till needed or installing it when there is no sun, first thing in the morning or at night.

The cost of ABS can be a  lot higher than of PVC. When using the larger sizes the costs are not as great and in many instances there is no choice but to use ABS borecasing and screens as upvc is not manufactured in large sizes often.

The material called as MPVC comes from the PVC which is Ploy vinyl Chloride. It is mainly Modified Poly vinyl chloride. The product called UPVC stands for Unplasticised Poly Vinyl Chloride and the term OPVC stands for oriented poly vinyl chloride. First we would take the purpose the types of PVC pipes. The utilization of the MPVC is manly in small wall thickness attachments whereas the areas of high thickness and high stress areas like sewage lines etc. The UPVC is used as they are more durable and due to the absence of plasticizing polymers, which makes them quite tough to external deformations. OPVC usage has many specific areas as it is oriented poly vinyl chloride. They are also in use for the sewage systems as well at water distribution areas of municipal corporations and other areas. These pipes are almost 35% lighter and easier to handle than general PVC pipes and quite easy to maintain. MPVC is fundamentally a thermoplastic alloy with additions of modified agents to increase the physical properties like ductility and toughness. It has been developed in recent years and has got wide applications in high pressure industrial applications, irrigations and water purification. These pipes do hold the structure and properties of PVC and with that added agents. When taking UPVC into account its physical structure and production procedure is same as any other PVC, but only thing is that as in case of PVC in the end it has not been softened by plasticizing which makes it tough for any impact. Basically because of its ability not get biologically decomposed, reshaping at high temperature (easy recycling) and stable under normal climatic conditions. They found immense applications at the conservatory manufacturing industry. It is also used in windows and door manufacturing. The thermoplastic capabilities of UPVC make it suitable for 10,000 applications in different forms. Now coming to OPVC and its differences from other two in terms of manufacture and structure is that while it is made, it is made by realigning the PVC molecules by means of biaxial orientation. The thickness gets reduced to up to 45% and the greatest physical enhancement that it gets is of its impact resistance which increases eight times. The strength also gets doubled. These pipes  have large bore capacity with increased hydraulic capacity. The use of OPVC has been increased in several folds in last seven years and has taken over UPVC. Whereas the leader in the market remains the MPVC which has got the highest spread of applications worldwide. In terms of Eco friendly factor,  OPVC cleans sweeps off other two as it has been proved that the future of PVC types lies with OPVC as they are most Eco friendly pipes available. Some of the other features of OPVC which makes them stand alone are its high corrosion resistivity, light weight, smooth bore with lowest frictional losses, high strength and recyclable. Whereas the currently existing  market, maximum used PVC pipes known as MPVC gives resistance to cracking, and low level stresses only which are not enough for current market. The use of UPVC has been in the rise for last ten years and almost equal and in some cases higher than use of MPVC because of its chemical resistivity, fire resistance and hygienic properties that it maintains. The first change of sewage system pipes from cast iron pipes to UPVC pipes have proved of be of significant help in every sphere. Indeed all three OPVC, UPVC and MPVC have its own importance and specific areas of application even though the future of piping lies with UPVC and OPVC pipes.

PVC Vs Steel Casing

With the advent of the PVC pipes which are fundamentally Poly Vinyl Chloride pipes the use of it in the bore casing in borehole has increased worldwide. The usage of steel has few problems associated with it in which foremost are the weight and flow characteristics. The steel bore casing in comparison to PVC pipes gives less volumetric efficiency. Bore casing pipes needed few troubleshoot things at its best like corrosion resistance and galvanic corrosion which are provided with 100% excellence by the PVC pipes. Steel pipes whenever comes I contact with water and mud after a period of time becomes vulnerable to galvanic corrosion. Some of the other features of the PVC pipes which makes it better for bore casings are that it does not require any external coating for protection which reduces the cost and maintenance but which was needed in case of the steel pipes. The PVC are totally unaffected by the acids and alkali which does attacks the bore casing but in case of the steel it needs further coating to prevent material damage. The steel pipes are not only heavy, but installation problems were pre dominant in this case, but the PVC pipes are much more lighter and far easy to install mostly at bends the effectiveness of the PVC can be easily observed. The steel pipes water transport in bore casing are no doubt safe but in case in the long run acidic corrosion, takes place it  demands complete removal but not in case of the PVC pipes which provides complete safe water transportation. The flow characteristics as per the survey and research it has shown that PVC pipes in bore casings provide 45% better flow (friction less) than the steel pipes used for the same purpose. In the newest advent of the PVC pipes,  the temperature consideration is one of the prime aspects as these PVC works best in a wider range of temperature than the steel pipes. The modern domestic usage of the PVC pipes for the bore casing at bore holes has increased up to 67% worldwide in the new installation. The long run maintenance free work of the PVC pipes than the steel has been the most prominent aspect of the PVC pipes installation in the bore casings of the borehole. In several cases,  the bacterial growth in the steel pipes of the bore casing has been evident which in terms lead to erosion and corrosion of the material, but with PVC pipes this problem does not exist at all as the polymer does not support bacterial growth at all in any place. The three basic things which are kinetic movement, polarization effect and the chemical reaction which may occur in case of steel pipes does not take place in PVC pipes for the bore casings at all. The algae growth does not occur in case of PVC pipes, which enhances its life to three fold than in comparison to steel pipes. Indeed the usage of the PVC has proved to be one of the best alternatives of the steel pipes for the bore casing of the bore hole in terms of price, maintenance, installation and long life of the piping.


The PVC pipes which are essentially Poly Vinyl Chloride. It is the latest advent as a replacement of the metal pipes that was in use for last several centuries. The PVC is in some cases, not inert whereas HDPE pipes are commonly used for their inert characteristics and they are highly corrosion resistant. No taking in terms of the material of production the PVC pipes are made of Poly Vinyl Chloride out of which plasticizers are added to it to make it much more flexible and soft. The production of HDPE pipes, which are High Density Polyethylene pipes which are high in strength in comparison to its density. The highest strength plastic pipes available are the HDPE pipes. Now coming to the application of these two pipes the PVC pipes has got more application areas than the HDPE pipes like PVC pipes are used for water distribution and sewage pipelines. The usage of the PVC pipes is also in the field of irrigation across the world for its excellent corrosion resistant characteristics. The sanitary usage of the PVC is also quite high ad has proved to be highly productive one. The HDPE pipes are chemically inert and that it is why in safe and edible oil or in such consumable fluid distribution the usage of HDPE has been found. Due its light weight and high strength in extended distribution system where PVC may prove to be insecure the HDPE pipes play a good role. The abrasion and chemical resistance of the HDPE pipes has been used in the transfer chemical products also, in the market. In some cases even though the cost of the HDPE is greater the smooth flow characteristics of these pipes is more than the common PVC pipes found in the market. HDPE pipes are considered more durable and in terms 60% more safer than the PVC pipes usage in the market. Now coming to the cost factor, obviously HDPE is much more expensive than conventional PVC available in the market and this feature has lead to reduction of the usage of the HDPE pipes on a large scale. In last 7 to 8 years,  the usage of the HDPE pipes has been in the field of the telecom industry also. The plasticizers those, which are found in PVC are not found in HDPE which makes up a little difficulty in giving flexibility to the product. The insulation characteristics of PVC pipes are less than the HDPE pipes, and this has been utilized in various core industries. Even though the usage of the PVC pipes is still much more than the HDPE pipes around the world due to the cost factor as well as the lack of flexibility that the HDPE pipes do have than the PVC pipes. The shift from PVC to HDPE has been reported in the sewage line systems by various municipal corporations around the world which is showing a new dimension in the piping market.

A problem with using poly pipe for borecasing is that due to its molecular weight if the bore has a very high static water level then the poly casing will float and come up out of the ground, this is why upvc pipe is used for casing in water bores, it is heavier than water and will sink.

In environmental bores, if the bore is to look for hydrocarbons, such as fuels and oils the HDPE would be used as pvc would be eaten away.

My PVC Casing is disappearing, where has it gone?

HDPE is used as an alternative material for PVC bore casing in monitoring wells, it is not usually used as bore casing due to its molecular weight, as it is lighter than water it will float and has been found to pop out of the bore into the air on deeper bores. Its chemical resistance is what makes it interesting and capable of being used in monitoring wells, especially where Hydrocarbons are in the water solution. Hydro carbons will eat PVC very quickly so the monitoring bore will collapse and a new bore drilled making this an expensive operation.

By using HDPE in this situation is the ideal solution being fairly inert to the hydro carbon solutions, the HDPE casing must be grouted or cemented in place so the pipe will not float out of the hole.
